As many of you probably already know, Matt and I got married and honeymooned at the Sandals Ochi resort in Jamaica. So many of you have wanted to know about our trip and experience at the resort I thought it would be best to compile everything into one blog post. This post will focus on our trip experience. I will cover my Sandals wedding review in a separate post. This was Matt’s first time out of the country, and he was beyond excited to see and learn all about the Jamaican culture.
We stayed for 8 nights, which was the perfect amount of time since we were also getting married, but I would suggest 5-6 nights for a normal vacation. We choose to stay in one of the more private rooms (Butler village one bedroom poolside villa estate suite -G1). We had a nice living room with a wet bar, along with a great master bedroom and big bathroom. I think my favorite feature was the semi-private pool that we only shared with the two rooms above us. Honestly I never saw any of them at the pool. Matt and I hung out there often and ordered room service. You can see in the photo above the big patio that was outside of our room that overlooked our private pool. There is air-conditioning in all of the rooms, it just isn’t super powerful. However if that is a big deal to you Matt’s mom stayed in the main hotel for the wedding and her room was nice and cool.
Butler service, is it worth it? That is a hard question to answer. Matt and I got it because it was our wedding so we went all in, and I definitely don’t regret it. When we booked this room (which comes with the butler) it was on a deal: buy 6 nights get 1 free, which really did not make it too much more then many of the other rooms. When considering the price of a butler, do keep in mind that unlike throughout the rest of your stay at Sandals where gratuity is prohibited, it is allowed to tip your butler at the end of your stay. Now more about the perks of having a butler. Many of the popular restaurants book up quickly, so your butler will plan your dinners ahead of time for you so you don’t miss the best spots. You are given a phone to reach your butler throughout the day and they can bring you anything you need whether it be an item from your room you forgot or a little snack. Keep in mind that your butler is also working with up to 10 other couples, so you do not have their undivided attention. We enjoyed it, but would likely only choose to have a butler again if we got a great deal while booking.
Favorite Things To Do
Sandals really does have a lot of activities, some of which are included. My highlights of the trip were the Dun River Falls, which was an extra off site excursion. The last day of our trip we paid for a pool cabana which we both agreed was 110% worth it and will do that again the next time we stay there. You get a nice cabana all day long and a special pool butler that comes by and brings you drinks and food. What more can a girl ask for? Every evening they had a speak-easy with a different password to get in, which was so much fun. Matt and I also enjoyed some of the spa features, we got a couples massage which was relaxing (but expensive) and I also got a manicure. I want to quickly remark how friendly the staff were all across Sandals. They always want to make sure you are enjoying your day. It did rain two of the eight days we were there and I must say sadly they do not have many indoor rainy day activities.
There were so many restaurants at the resort we stayed at, we didn’t even get to eat at them all. Sandals really made an effort to make the food unique to the area and have a lot of Jamaican culture in the dishes they serve. I will be honest Matt was not a big fan of the food, he just likes his good old basics and they seamed to try to make everything a little different or special. My favorite was their breakfast food, they had the most amazing french toast. Since everything in included, if you order something you don’t love they will gladly bring you something else to try. If you are a coffee lover like I am, you have to try their Jamaican blue mountain coffee, it is amazing. Also as I am sure you know the alcohol drinks are also included, so I was able to try so many different drinks that I normally wouldn’t try. My favorite was the dirty banana.
I can not stress this enough. My brother had a in-date passport but had not used it in two years. He showed up to board his flight to Jamaica for our wedding and his passport would not scan. New regulations require it must scan. They can not physically type in the number. He was unable to board the plane and missed our wedding. This is two major learning lessons, Make sure your passport is currently working and does not expire within 6 months, and also get trip insurance. Sandals did not give them any of their money back. Also, when booking see how far away your hotel is from the airport, Ochi was only 60 or so miles away but it was a 2 hour + car ride.
Matt and I really enjoyed ourselves and made so many memories. We think next time we go on that long of a trip it would be fun to go with another couple to enjoy the experience with, and Matt could have a golfing buddy haha. Sandals overall offered great amenities, but we are interested in visiting another resort, the next one on my list is Montego Bay over the ocean suites.
